Program Topic: Building on a Legacy: the New Pikes Peak Summit Complex
Pikes Peak ? America?s Mountain ? is one of the most visited mountains in the world and is a top tourist attraction for the State of Colorado. However, the 1960s era Pikes Peak Summit Complex is no longer meeting the need of its ever-growing numbers.
Stuart L. Coppedge, FAIA
After considering marine biology and studying chemical engineering, Stuart Coppedge turned to architecture and graduated with degrees in environmental design and architecture from the University of Oklahoma in 1984, moved back to Colorado in 1986, and earned his architecture license the following year. His professional accomplishments were recognized in 2018 by his induction into the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects.
In addition to his years of leadership and service at all levels of the AIA, Coppedge chairs the Board of Directors of Atlas Preparatory School and is the immediate past chair of the Colorado Springs Downtown Review Board and the Board of Directors of the Colorado Springs Downtown Partnership.
As a principal with Colorado Springs? RTA Inc., a 44-person architecture, interiors, and planning firm, Stuart?s projects have included education, healthcare, commercial, religious, and civic facilities. He leads the firm?s business development efforts and, after several years of K?12 education master planning and design including a $54M transformational series of projects in Ignacio, CO, successfully shifted his project focus to civic and higher education work, including the William J. Hybl Sports Medicine and Performance Center at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, new restrooms in the iconic Garden of the God Park, and the new Pikes Peak Summit Complex.
No stranger to the high country, he has hiked 38 of Colorado?s 14ers, including multiple summits of Pikes Peak from both sides. He considers leading the Pikes Peak Summit Complex work a once in a career challenge for an architect and a true honor for a long-time citizen of Colorado Springs.
